The route at a glance
The Via Claudia Augusta follows one of the oldest Roman roads across the Alps, about 775 kilometres from Donauwörth on the Danube via Augsburg and Füssen to northern Italy. You climb the Fern Pass (1,216 m) and the Reschen Pass (1,507 m), then descend through the Vinschgau orchards to Merano, Bolzano and Trento. There one branch runs via Verona to Ostiglia on the Po, the harder one via Feltre to Altino near Venice. Paths are almost all asphalt; GPS helps as signposting varies by country.
