The route at a glance

The Saale-Radweg follows the Saale for about 400 kilometres, from its source near Zell in the Fichtelgebirge to where it joins the Elbe near Barby. At first you ride through wooded uplands beside the young river, while further downstream water meadows and steep vineyards shape the valley. On the way you pass the university town of Jena and, further north, Halle with Giebichenstein Castle, plus plenty of castles, palaces and churches. The route is well signposted and mixes easy stretches with a few more demanding sections.
