The route at a glance

The Grenzgängerroute Teuto-Ems runs for about 148 kilometres through the border country between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. From Rheine you first ride through the flat river landscape of the Ems, with water meadows and plenty of water birds. Then the land turns hillier and more wooded as the route climbs into the Teutoburg Forest, with towns such as Bad Iburg, Hilter am Teutoburger Wald and Bad Laer. The paths are well signposted and mostly flat to gently rolling, so the route is manageable without much touring experience.
