The route at a glance

The Great Allegheny Passage, or GAP, is a car-free trail of about 150 miles (around 241 km) linking Cumberland, Maryland, with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It runs through historic railroad tunnels, over viaducts and old railway bridges, through deep forest and along the Youghiogheny River. Grades are gentle, and information boards along the way explain the local nature and history. You stop overnight in towns such as Ohiopyle, Connellsville and McKeesport, often in bed and breakfasts, before rolling into Pittsburgh.
